There’s no doubt that there is a, and always will be, a significant demand for design-led timepieces. Watches immediately invoke imagery of classic timeless brands – Rolex, Mondaine, Tag Heuer – and thoughts of precision Swiss engineering. The designs of timepieces are rife with historical references, knowingly or unknowingly paying tribute to design great of old. Nomad is no different. A contemporary Scottish watch brand that cares about the small details and places value in true craftsmanship. Calling on a global network of collaborators, each watch carries the clean lines and durable sensibilities of Nomad, as well as nuances of the designer’s own environment.
We were approached by Nomad in 2016 having successfully collaborated with the creators on a different eCommerce venture of theirs for a long time before. The challenge with Nomad was quite different though. The plan was to take the new product to market leveraging the huge demand for design-led timepieces by way of a crowdfunding campaign. Nomad needed to raise £15,000 in funding in 30 days. Not only was the objective high but the competition was fierce, crowdfunding campaigns for watch brands are plentiful….
Having already forged a strong working relationship with Alan and Kelsey, we worked integrally with them to understand their – and Nomad’s – ‘why’. Knowing that successful crowdfunding campaigns are best focused on the cause, not the product/output, we had to be sure that the messaging was consistent and served to raise the design up beyond simply being ‘another crowdfunded watch’.
We worked to help refine the messaging across the: website, Kickstarter page, social media profiles, and campaign creative, emphasising the points that differentiated Nomad from its competitors. We then devised a strategy centred around the 30-day campaign lifecycle, identifying and reaching out to different well-known publications to generate buzz and excitement both pre-launch and during campaign.
The Kickstarter campaign reached its fundraising goal of £15,000 (~$20,000) after just 11 days, with the various activations that we had planned throughout the campaign duration, this raised to over double +105.78% the fundraising target (£30,867 / ~$40,000) by the final day, with some 254 backers from across the globe supporting the launch.
While this campaign was quite unique in its nature, we at Pole Star Digital used creative thinking and expert skills across a broad array of digital disciplines to help achieve the ultimate in real-world value, helping to launch a new brand & in doing so, start a company that is still going strong today!
